The holidays are approaching and everyone seems to be getting into the “Christmas spirit.” People are decorating their houses with lights, Christmas trees, stockings and other various decorations. I love the holidays, but I think someone crazy made up all these traditions.
On Thanksgiving Day, we get together with our families, eat a giant meal, that we only eat because “what the heck, it’s the holidays,” and give thanks for all the good things that have happened in our lives. The day after Thanksgiving, better known as Black Friday, we decide to attack people for merchandise in stores right after being thankful for what we already have, just because it costs less than on most days of the year.
Then we move on to decorating a Christmas tree. We do it every year. We put a star or an angel on top, put lights on it, hang various ornaments that usually don’t make any sense, and call it good. For anyone who has thought about the concept, it’s crazy. We are literally dragging nature inside our house, forcing it to wear jewelry and a skirt, and doing it all “for Jesus.”
Society has also decided that during Christmas time, the outside is too dark. We can’t have darkness during this time of joy and happiness! So we decide to put lights on our house that make the outside bright during the night. By doing this, our neighbors can’t sleep because the light is burning their retinas and causing them to go blind.
Next, we move on to Santa Claus. We are all so excited for a fat man to break into our house and leave us gifts. We’re so thrilled he’s coming that we decide to feed him and his reindeer so he can break into other childrens’ homes and do the same for them.
But where is Santa going to put the presents? We’ve got it covered. We’re going to hang a large sock above the fireplace so Santa can put things in that sock. On any other day of the year, it would be completely unacceptable to carry around a large sock and expect a complete stranger to put a gift in it.
So during this holiday season, think about what your traditions are, and where they came from. You might be surprised by how crazy your family really is.
