After losing its first two games at home, Paola bounced back on the road against the Spring Hill Broncos Sept. 14. Despite three fumbles inside of field-goal range, the Panthers were able to hold on and beat the Broncos 16-14.
Senior linebacker Brandon Haggerty came up with a big hit on the quarterback which led to an interception by junior Andrew Henn late in the game.
With the game coming to an end, Henn came up with a big first down for the Panthers on third-and-nine allowing Paola to take a knee and run out the clock.
Paola scored first on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Henn to junior Mitch
Sloan three minutes into the game. The drive was set up by an interception from junior Jeremy Criddle on the Bronco’s 30-yard line.
Spring Hill came back and answered with 3-yard touchdown run to tie the score 7-7.
Paola came knocking on the door again, but came up empty after the 77-yard drive ended in a missed field goal by junior Lucas Wilson.
After a short punt by Spring Hill, giving the Panthers excellent field position, Paola managed to score off a 30-yard field goal by Wilson taking a 10-7 lead into the half.
Spring Hill took the lead on its first possession of the half, scoring on a 54-yard touchdown run with 9:30 left in the third, making the score 14-10.
Paola launched another drive of more than 60-yards but fumbled inside the Spring Hill 15-yard line.
After another Spring Hill punt, Paola scored on a 5-yard touchdown run by Sloan with more than eight minutes left in the game. The score was 16-14 after Wilson missed the extra-point attempt.
Paola held off a late drive by Spring Hill with a huge interception by Henn to help Paola secure its first win.
With the win Paola improves to 1-2, and 1-1 in league play.
