For the tenth time since the turn of the century the tom-tom belongs to the Panthers. Paola celebrated homecoming by steam-rolling the Osawatomie Trojans 62-18. The annual game between Paola and Osawatomie has come to mean a lot to both teams and can bring out the best play from each team. “Our mindset is the same, but we practice harder than usual so we are ready,” junior Matt Petelin said. Osawatomie scored right off the bat with a 90 yard kick-off return, really taking the crowd out of the game. Paola was able to stop the two-point conversion taking away some of the sting of their early mistake. After a Trojan onside kick, Paola scored on the first play thanks to a Tanner Staats 55 yard touchdown run. Paola missed the PAT so the score was 6-6 after 45 seconds of sloppy football. The Panthers mixed in some passing along with their run-heavy offense Friday night throwing five times, all complete, and four for touchdowns. Paola ran for 375 yards and had 127 yards passing. Osawatomie managed to gain 218 yards on the ground against a solid Panther defense. The Trojans had one complete pass which was overlooked because their receiver was carted out on a stretcher after he was tackled. The receiver was hit in the back by sophomore Andrew Henn, the hit knocked off his helmet, and then he was hit in the front by junior Nevin McCraken. The hit gave him a concussion and an injury to his neck, the player was however back to normal after he spent the rest of the game in the hospital. The game was close early on but Paola was able to run away as the game progressed because of Osawatomie’s small roster and multiple onside kicks giving Paola a short field to work with. Paola was able to substitute for tired players whenever it was needed while the Trojans only had seven substitutes and three timeouts to combat the Panther’s much bigger roster. Paola plays Spring Hill next Friday, Oct. 21, in Paola for Senior Night. Scoring Plays for Paola
