The soccer team is vying for the chance to rebound from last season’s early exit from the regional tournament at the hands of Louisburg in the second round. Since most of the starters are returning, the coaches look for the team to improve. Head coach Clint Maynard said he expects to have a better season with eight returning varsity players. “This season we would like to have 10 wins, play good consistent soccer, and to put something on the banner in the gym,” Maynard said. Assistant coach Adam Herron has similar goals. “My expectations for this season are for us to play and be better than last year,” said Herron. Senior Jobie Debrick has a more optimistic goal. “I expect nothing less than a State Championship in soccer this season,” Debrick said. The soccer team has a lot of strong points that will help them attain their goals. “As a team we never stop playing hard,” Maynard said, “No matter what the score we will always be competing.” Herron said the team also has other upsides. “We have a lot of players which allows us to have a lot of subs and we all have more experience than last year,” he said. Debrick said the team has a new player that might help the team. “Transfer student Josh Newberry, senior, will be a strength this year,” Debrick said. To have a better season the team must improve in areas of weakness. “We need to get better at our communication and organization on and off the field in order to improve on last year’s run,” Maynard said. Communication and organization isn’t the only thing in whch the coaches would like to see improvement in. “I would like to see improvement in our number of wins, smartness of play, and improvement in our regional tournament finish,” Herron said.
