State championships are the dream ending to a high school athlete’s season. Senior sprinter Trent Teuscher and sophomore softball player Molli Morgan are no different.
Teuscher said the boys’ track team is doing well early in the season as well as the girls’ team.
“The boys’ track team is undefeated after four meets in the season and the girls’ team has won all but one those,” he said.
Head track coach Mike Smith said the track team has some strengths this year that are boosting them to the top.
“The boys have been solid in the field events and strong in the distance events,” Smith said.
Teuscher said that he has an optimistic outlook for a state championship run in boys’ track this year.
“Our chances at a state title look good and everyone’s hopes are high since we have done well so far,” he said.
Track isn’t the only sport that has aspirations for a state title this year. Softball looks to replicate last year’s success and make it back to the state tournament.
Varsity softball coach Troy Collier said the softball team placed third at state last year, and while nowhere near that level now, they can obtain it.
“We have a lot of work to do before we reach our full potential, but we expect to finish strong,” Collier said.
Morgan said the team is a close group, which they will need when the going gets tough.
“We are working well together as a team this year, something we were lacking last year when we did well,” Morgan said. “We might have gone farther if we worked more as a team.”
Collier said the team has experience and leadership going for them, but they still need to put it all together.
“We have nine returning letterwinners from last year, a strong offense and defense, but we just aren’t quite meshing yet,” Collier said.
Morgan said she has high expectations for the softball team.
“We have expectations for a state run this year with all the talent we have on the team,” Morgan said.
Teuscher and Morgan both said they know their teams have work to do before they win state, but remain confident.
“The best is yet to come,” Collier said.
