Sophomore Abbi Lopez laughed as she recalled the time she spent with head custodian Craig Henness. Lopez and Henness made a bet this winter as to how many days school would be out due to an approaching blizzard. Henness won a whole 50 cents by guessing the correct number of days.
Henness died of pneumonia March 5 after helping with a forensics tournament and the sub-state basketball games.
Principal Jerry Henn loved to watch how Henness interacted with students. In a previous interview Henness said he worked for the school for seven years.
“He was an outstanding man,” said Henn.
Junior Luke Johnston, office aide, remembered Henness as a mischievous and funny character.
Johnston said Henness enjoyed playing pranks on the office aides and making jokes.
Junior Samantha Oberg said Henness wasn’t afraid to do anything for anyone.
” Craig would do things for the office before we even asked him to,” said junior Moriah Gallagher.
Henness was there for everyone, not just students. Leslie Coats theater teacher said that Henness was always there for her when she needed him.
In honor of Henness, student council is attempting to name the commons area after him and hang a plaque with his name. Henn said the school board has to approve the decision.
“The commons area was where Henness was whenever anyone needed him,” explained Henn.
Coats said drama club and forensics have made a scholarship in his name. The scholarship will be awarded to a senior letter-holder in forensics or drama club who has qualities similar to Henness.
The person who is awarded with this scholarship must be an outstanding person who always helps people said Coats.
