“I left my jobs in collegiate sports to work with kids because I believe it is one of the best things you can do,” said gifted teacher Lou Onofrio.
Onofrio taught at the middle school for 11 years. He had previously worked with high school students as Paola’s assistant soccer coach for three years and a head golf coach for two years.
He said the students and parents are awesome to work with.
Sophomore Austin Kehoe said Onofrio is a good teacher who always challenges his students.
Holly Hutchinson is the new fine arts teacher. She teaches Photography 1 & 2, one Art 1 class and Cinema Studies with Stuart Ross.
She graduated from Emporia State and taught for two years in Ulysses. She looks forward to seeing how students develop in photography class.
“Since this is new subject matter to me, it’ll be interesting to see how successful they can be,” she said.
Senior Beth Petelin said she enjoys how Hutchinson explores different techniques than the ones she learned from Megan Batrez, the previous photography teacher.
Principal Jerry Henn said that both teachers are doing very well. He is pleased to have both of them.
“Because of district budgets cuts, Onofrio was moved from the middle school to the high school,” said Henn. Hutchinson was one of five people interviewed out of 60.
Out of the five interviewed, the school administration chose her and believe she will do an excellent job, said Henn.
