Freshman Maddie Slyter said she was one of many students who was caught cheating through text.
“My consequence was Friday Night School,” Slyter said. “It was the worst three hours of my life. We sat in the library and stared at a wall.”
Slyter said the consequence wasn’t enough to scare some people.
“As we walked out of Friday Night School, someone involved in the text asked me for that nights’ Spanish answers,” Slyter said.
According to the iKeepSafe website, cheating has become more common in the classroom due to technology, whether it be phones, calculators and watches.
English teacher Michelle Abshire said the question now going through teacher’s minds is how to get rid of cheating once and for all.
“Students in my class automatically get a zero and the student being cheated on also gets a zero if they are aware the other student is cheating off them,” Abshire said.
Abshire said teachers try to handle cases of cheating as soon as they are aware it is happening.
“I think within the English department we try to be very similar,” Abshire said.
Freshman Skyilar Rios was also caught in the group chat.
“Now I know cheating is bad and if I saw someone else cheating I would think it was wrong,” Rios said.
Sophomore Christian Lucas said he has witnessed cheating hundreds of times.
“They weren’t punished because they weren’t caught,” Lucas said. “Who gets caught?”
Lucas said the reason so many people get away with cheating is because they don’t do it in front of teachers or in the classroom they do it before school or at home when no one can see.
“When someone gets caught cheating, it’s not only them that get punished, but the whole class, or even school,” Lucas said. “The teachers now have an eye out for cheaters and are stricter with rules in the classroom.”
Lucas said students shouldn’t cheat, but if they do, they shouldn’t get caught.
