“Being able to create something, whether that just be new ideas, is super rewarding and therapeutic,” Julie Knowles, senior, said.
Knowles has had a passion for music, art and film for years.
She began playing guitar in seventh grade, but she quickly switched her interests to bass.
“The mix of percussion and rhythm on a string instrument is what really interested me,” Knowles said.
Knowles’s taste in music alters depending on her mood, but her biggest inspirations are Mr. Bungle, Channel 23 and Amy Winehouse.
“Jazz elements and horns are really prevalent in all three and that’s what I aspire to model my own music after,” Knowles said.
Besides music, Knowles likes to channel creative energy into illustrations. She typically works with pencil drawings and has practiced from a young age.
“Stephen Gammell’s art in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was super inspirational to me at a young age, so I’ve carried that over to my art now,” Knowles said.
Knowles also enjoys watching movies. Her favorite genres are horror and thrillers. While these are her preferred types of movies, she’s willing to watch anything with a good narrative or cinematography.
“For a film to be good, it has to make the audience uncomfortable in some way,” Knowles said.
Knowles said she plans to pursue art in college, but not as a career. She enjoys art because it’s an expressive way to relieve stress.
“Art has changed me in that it allows for me to see situations in many different ways and creativity makes life so much more enjoyable,” Knowles said.
